Getting Started

Start your advocacy off on the right foot by taking the time to plan and prepare for what lies ahead.

 

STEP 1: Score the Menu

To get a baseline assessment of the current healthfulness of your institution's food offerings, first find a copy of the menu by visiting the website or contacting them. ​

 

Once you have the menu, you can use the Balanced Scorecard to find out its score. Before filling out the form, be sure to read the guide below or watch the video tutorial.

You'll need to calculate the percentage and find the matching grade level for your institution: A, B, C, D, or F.

STEP 2: Research the Institution

Taking the time to research your institution is an important phase of preparing to advocate.

 

If you're using the Toolkit on your own, browse the Complete Research Checklist​ to find out what we recommend learning about your institution, and organize what you find using the Sample Research Spreadsheet.  If you need help, reach our to our Advocacy Team and we can help complete the research process for you.

Once you've finished learning about your institution, move onto Step 3: Deciding on Your Ask, where you'll use this information to figure out what changes you'll be requesting.

 

STEP 3: Decide on Your Ask

Before moving forward into the next stages of your advocacy, it's important to set a goal for what changes you'd like to see at your institution. Next, take some time to brainstorm how those changes would be implemented as a policy commitment - that's your "ask". Your ask of the institution should always be:

feasible

impactful

evidence-based

OUR RECOMMENDED ASK

REDUCE

disease-promoting meat and egg products by 20%

REPLACE

with vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains
